Waste Determination
Is my waste a Regulated Hazardous Waste?
Waste may be determined to be a Regulated Hazardous Waste if it: a) exhibits a hazardous characteristic, or, b) if it is a listed waste.
Listed Wastes
A waste is a Regulated Hazardous Waste if it is found on any of four lists found in the Code of Federal Regulations (40 CFR 261.31. 261.32 or 261.33) . These lists include specific commercial chemicals, waste from specific listed procedures, and waste of specific types.
F - List ; only the first five items(F001-F005) on this list are typically generated in labs
K - List ; none of these items are typically generated at Bowdoin College
P - List and U - List ; generally, this list refers to ONLY unused discarded stocks of chemicals in their original containers
Characteristic Wastes
A waste not specifically listed may still be a Regulated Hazardous Waste if it exhibits any of the following characteristics:
1. Ignitability
2. Corrosivity
3. Reactivity
4. Toxicity
The specifications for these characteristics are in the Code of Federal Regulations (40 CFR 261.21 ,261.22, 261.23, 261.24).
