Just click on one of your contacts in Teams and click the phone icon to call them. Just like on your smartphone. In fact, Teams Calling can run on your smartphone. And your desktop/laptop. And your tablet. From anywhere.

If you're less familiar with the Teams app, Teams Calling will still be familiar because ... well ... it's a phone system, and you can use it just like any other phone system -- by dialing a number and clicking "call". There are even Teams Calling phones that work just like regular phones, if you actually need one.

Why do we need a new phone system?

Long before any of us ever heard of Covid-19, Bowdoin's current phone system was already slated for replacement, because it was already well beyond the vendor's end-of-support, and we can no longer get replacement phones and parts to keep it functioning in the future.

Then the pandemic hit. And suddenly the old system's limitations became all too apparent: it didn't support working remotely well, and it didn't help us collaborate with our students and our coworkers.

When will we start using Teams Calling?

Some staff are already using Teams Calling to test the new system.

Unlike many I.T. projects, not everyone will switch to Teams Calling at the same time. Instead, we can work with individuals, work groups, or entire departments to determine when it works best for them to switch to Teams Calling.

However, everyone must be switched to Teams Calling by May 31, 2022, when our old phone system will cease to function.

How does Teams Calling work?

Once we change a couple settings on your Bowdoin account, you'll be able to start using Teams to make calls on any of your devices that supports a version of the Teams app — your laptop or desktop, your smartphone, your tablet, or a new Teams Calling phone.

To see Teams Calling in action, view the following video, at right.
--> <!--

Where can I get help with Teams Calling?

The I.T.
