Look at your Training Certification Card (or “Blue Card”) to see when your current trainings expire. If your training expiration date is approaching you will need to renew your training. Most laboratory workers will need to repeat at least TWO trainings: Hazardous Waste Management Training and Laboratory Safety Training. These trainings are required by OSHA and EPA and each training must be repeated annually. If you will be working with live animals you may need additional training. Contact the Animal Care Supervisor (Marko Melendy 725-3517, mmelendy@bowdoin.edu) for further information and to schedule a training.
What are the two program options for Laboratory Safety Training?
If you need to renew your lab safety training for the upcoming academic year OR if you are new to Bowdoin and need to get your initial lab safety certification you now have TWO OPTIONS:
Option 1 - View the online, 2-hour lab safety videos and complete the test associated with the online training. This is the traditional method and, until recently, the only option. This training must be renewed annually by redoing the procedure again.
Option 2 - Attend a one hour live training that will be conducted during the first week of classes each semester. For individuals choosing option #2 and attending the training, annual renewal of your lab safety training will be accomplished very differently. Every two weeks an email will be sent out containing a link to a five-minute “Safety Break”. These Safety Breaks will vary in content from week to week, sometimes a straightforward safety video, sometimes a link to a safety related article, sometimes a message regarding an incident or accident or policy change here at Bowdoin. The only thing that ALL Safety Breaks will have in common is an average duration of ~ 5 MINUTES.
After attending the live training session you will be issued a Safety Break Logsheet. Each time you engage in viewing a Safety Break during the year, you can log it on this sheet. If after a year’s time you have logged 20 Safety Breaks on your log sheet, you can submit the sheet to the Office of Laboratory Safety and you will be issued a new Blue Card - no need to re-do the online training! (If you opt to not view the Safety Breaks- you can redo the on-line or live training and get a new Blue Card.)
If you have a current Blue Card, but want to switch to the Option 2 program, then you MUST attend a live training. The existing two-hour on-line training cannot be used in place of the Option 2 live training in the Option 2 program.
